Community. Communion between audience and performers. Inspiration, anticipation, spontaneity; SHARED transcendent moments. Do you miss these things? I sure do! The Virtual Dream Café (VDC) attempts to recreate this atmosphere, via Zoom (interactive environment), until live music venues are able to reopen.
January is definitely the Month of Michigan in the VDC! Annie & Rod Capps and Jim Bizer are STELLAR musicians, as well as songwriters. They join Chicago Sue Fink for a rollicking night of (in the) rounds!
About the Performers:
- Annie and Rod Capps are on a musical journey that began in 1982, culminating into a symbiotic sound that reflects their deep and intuitive understanding of each other. Annie’s disarming, earthy voice and solid command of her guitar are punctuated by Rod’s effortless accompaniment and beautiful solo work. Together they weave unforgettable melodies that are at once intricate and sparse – musically completing each others’ sentences. “Songs about broken things and poignant little ponderings are delivered with a rootsy vibe, a touch of twang and a soulful groove.”
Annie and Rod play in various musical configurations, and in 2017, they joined forces with Jan Krist and Jim Bizer, along with Jan’s husband/percussionist, Alan Finkbeiner, to form Diamonds in the Rust. They also host “On the Tracks,” a music series in Chelsea, and are very involved with the folk music community, locally and nationally. https://annieandrodcapps.com/
- Gigging since age 14 and a career musician all of his adult life, Detroit native Jim Bizer has been around the musical block. He's got a comfortable, deep groove and a restless imagination. His songs are a unique blend of humor, catchy melodies, and his own personal view of the essential craziness of being human - served up with some monster guitar playing and vocals.
In addition to being a solo artist, he’s worked as a "cover" musician, session player, composer for radio spots and a weekly television series. Now he’s joined forces with longtime friend and collaborator, Jan Krist, as a duo; with Annie & Rod as Diamonds in the Rust; and Jim’s a pivotal member of the rollicking folk/roots-rock/slightly bluegrassy/party gospel band Floyd King & the Bushwackers. He also leads songwriting and guitar workshops and hosts MAMA's Coffeehouse, a monthly acoustic music concert series in suburban Detroit. https://www.jimbizer.com/ - Chicago-based singer-songwriter Sue Fink enchants audiences with her whimsical perspective on the world, through her compelling songs and charming performances. Her genre, “urban campfire cabaret,” is folk with a hint of jazz, a large dollop of humor, and a drop of sadness for good measure. Her songs receive airplay locally and nationally, including "The Midnight Special" (WFMT) and "Folk Festival" (Lilli Kuzma, WDCB); most recently, her “Alternate Universe” song was included in Episode 691 of This American Life (NPR).
Sue performs solo, as CatBird (duo with Jane Godfrey), and as SongSisters (trio with Amy Dixon-Kolar and Patti Shaffner). As host of the Virtual Dream Café, Sue appears in the round with very talented performers whom she feels everyone should get to know. https://suefink.com/
About the show format:
- "In the round" means we each perform a song, one after another. Performers are inspired by each other's songs, and spontaneity abounds!
- This show runs from 7:30 to ~8:30 pm (CST), approximately 1 hour... so, likely 3 to 4 rounds.
- "Doors open" at 7:15pm, so we can chat before the show begins. (Zoom is an interactive environment, where performers and audience can see and hear each other! Audience will be muted during the show, for sound clarity issues, but we can talk before and after the performance.)
- This will be an intentional show: we ask you to donate to reserve your seat, and then be present so we can share community. The show will NOT be recorded for later viewing. The intent is for us to share the magic together, in real time.
- Your generous $donation goes directly to these artists. Your donation also reserves your place in the "Zoom room," so to speak. We look forward to sharing music, and community, with you!
